IMMODESTY: A CAUSE FOR THE PUNISHMENT OF ALLĀH!

Allāh Ta’ālā has made this world one of cause and effect. When a hungry person eats, Allāh Ta’ālā causes him to be satiated. Food is beneficial for his body, while poison is harmful. Allāh Ta’ālā has placed different effects in different things. Likewise, Allāh Ta’ālā’s system is that whenever a nation is obedient to Him, it brings safety and prosperity. On the other hand, when people are ungrateful to Allāh Ta’ālā and disobey Him, He tests them with fear and poverty.

The conditions we face are directly under the control of Allāh Ta’ālā. The current unrest and disruption are not excluded from His divine control. They are a result of our actions, cause and effect. Allāh Ta’ālā warns us in the Qur’ān Karīm:

“Corruption has become manifest on the land and sea because of the actions of people, so that Allāh may cause them to taste the consequence of some of their deeds, and perhaps they may return to the right path.” (Ar-Rūm, 41)

When looking for a solution, we must identify the root cause of the problem. Otherwise, we may be like a person reviving a dying tree by watering its leaves while neglecting its roots.

What is the root cause of our plight? Looking at the Hadīth, we find that Nabi Sallallāhu ‘Alayhi Wa Sallam pointed to two actions that attract the punishment of Allāh Ta’ālā:

“When Zina (adultery) and Riba (interest) become common in any place, the inhabitants have actually invited the punishment of Allāh upon themselves.” (Tabrāni, 462)

Our Dīn places great emphasis on modesty. Nabi Sallallāhu ‘Alayhi Wa Sallam said:

“Modesty and faith (Imān) are linked to one another. When one is lost, the other soon follows.” (Shu’ābul Imān, 7331)

Tragically, wherever we turn, immodesty has become the order of the day. If we do not reform, we attract further difficulties and unrest. May Allāh Ta’ālā protect us!

Some common contributors to immodesty:

Cellphones

The cellphone has become a doorway to immodesty and shamelessness. Pornography, shameful videos, and similar content are commonplace. We have become so desensitized to this immodesty that we don’t even bat an eyelid when seeing shameful images.

We must regulate our phone usage. Use it solely for essential tasks and refrain from browsing simply to occupy time. Often, it requires just a single click or scroll to become addicted to Harām.

The World Cup

The World Cup, and the evils that go with it, is a breeding ground for immodesty. Prostitution, nudity, and shamelessness are an integral part of it. While we might not be physically there, our supporting and following it makes us equally guilty.

Nabi Sallallāhu ‘Alayhi Wa Sallam said:

“He who is absent (not present where evil is committed) but is pleased with it, it is as if he had participated in it.”

Especially now! At a time when the Ummah is bleeding around the world, and even in our own country we are faced with uncertainty and strife, how can we be so foolish as to take delight in such triviality?

Gym Culture & Padel

Tragically, Muslim males and females are found scantily dressed in environments of music and shamelessness, often having total strangers of the opposite gender as personal trainers. While this was inconceivable just a few years ago, it is now becoming more and more common. Padel tournaments, where couples play mixed doubles or even swap partners, are also unbelievably on the rise. Who is there in the Ummah of Nabi Sallallāhu ‘Alayhi Wa Sallam to stand up and speak out against such flagrant immodesty?

Dressing

Far from the simple and modest dressing of the Sahābah Radiyallāhu ‘Anhum, our clothing has become a statement of immodesty and fashion. Frequently, the ‘Awrah—the areas of the body that must be covered in Shariah—is left exposed for all to see. Tight-fitting clothing that utterly defeats the purpose of wearing clothes is almost acceptable now.

Conclusion

We are at the threshold of potential strife and difficulty, and we have to immediately shun any form of immodesty—from guarding our eyesight to avoiding immoral environments and the abuse of cellphones. Whatever it takes, we have to repent immediately.

We still have an opportunity. If we do not take heed and stop this immodest culture, we will only have ourselves to blame if—may Allāh Ta’ālā forbid—the punishment of Allāh Ta’ālā descends.
