Aadaab of Business and Dealings – Part 8

1. When purchasing an item, one should not degrade the item or find fault with it in order to get a discount. Similarly, when selling an item, one should not exaggerate and unduly praise the item in order to get a higher price or to convince the customer to purchase it.

Hazrat Mu’aadh bin Jabal (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) said: “The most pure earning is the earning of traders who (possess the following qualities); when they speak, they do not lie; when they are entrusted with something, they do not deceive; when they make a promise, they do not break their promise; when they purchase something, they do not degrade and find fault in the item (in order to decrease the price); when they sell, they do not exaggerate and unduly praise the item (in order to convince the purchaser or to sell it for a higher price); when they owe money, they do not delay in payment; and when money is owed to them, they do not cause difficulty to the debtor.”
