Sunnats and Aadaab of Tilaawat of the Qur’aan Majeed – Part 18

1. If one had memorized any portion of the Qur’aan Majeed, then one should ensure that one revises it regularly so that one does not forget it. The hadith has cautioned against neglecting the recitation of the Qur’aan Majeed and forgetting what one had memorised.

Hazrat Abu Musa Ash’ari (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) said, “Look after (and safeguard) the Qur’aan Majeed. I swear by Him in Whose hands is my life, it (the Qur’aan Majeed) can escape quicker from the heart than a camel can escape from its rope (with which it is tied).”

Hazrat Anas bin Maalik (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) said, “The rewards of the good deeds of my ummah were presented before me, to such an extent (that I was shown the reward for) a person picking up a small piece of dirt which was lying in the musjid, and the sins of my ummah were presented before me, and I did not see any sin greater than the sin of a person who forgot a surah or an aayah of the Qur’aan Majeed which he was blessed with.”

Note:
1. In this hadith, the sin of forgetting an aayah or surah of the Qur’aan Majeed is explained to be the worst of sins. The reason for this is that one is showing ingratitude to Allah Ta‘ala for this great bounty of the Qur’aan Majeed by neglecting its recitation and thereby forgetting what one had been blessed with.
2. Some ulama have explained that the admonition explained in this hadith is for the one who neglects the recitation of the Qur’aan Majeed and forgets what one had committed to memory. Other ulama hold the opinion that the admonition explained in this hadith is for the one who neglects the recitation of the Qur’aan Majeed to the extent that he does not only forget what he had committed to memory, but also forgets how to even recite the Qur’aan Majeed.
