The Farewell Hajj – Part 2

Staying at Zul Hulayfah
Zul Hulayfah is located about eight or nine kilometres from Madinah Munawwarah. Nowadays, it is commonly known as Bi’r ‘Ali, and the entire area is called Wadi e ‘Aqeeq.

Upon his arrival at Zul Hulayfah, Rasulullah Sallallahu ‘Alayhi Wa Sallam performed two Rak’aat of ‘Asr. He then performed the Maghrib and ‘Isha there, spending the night at this location. The following day, he also performed the Fajr and Zuhr there. All the noble wives (Ummahat ul Mu’mineen Radiyallahu ‘Anhunna) of Rasulullah Sallallahu ‘Alayhi Wa Sallam were also on this journey with him. At night, he visited all his wives, and thereafter, Rasulullah Sallallahu ‘Alayhi Wa Sallam took a bath (Ghusl of Janabat).

Later, when he decided to enter into the state of Ihraam, he performed a separate Ghusl. During this ritual, he used soap and applied perfume to his blessed body. Umm-ul-Mu’mineen, Sayyidatuna ‘A’isha Radiyallahu ‘Anha applied fragrance with her own hands upon Rasulullah Sallallahu ‘Alayhi Wa Sallam, which was emanating from his blessed hair and beard (Sahih al-Bukhari – Hadith No. 1464, 1465, p. 558)

Additionally, Rasulullah Sallallahu ‘Alayhi Wa Sallam performed Talbeed. This act refers to applying a special resin to the hair to neaten it so it does not remain untidy or attract any form of lice, etc. Thereafter, Rasulullah Sallallahu ‘Alayhi Wa Sallam donned the two sheets of Ihraam and performed two Rak’aat Salaah.

There are differing opinions on whether these two Rak’aats were for Zuhr or Nafl for Ihraam. Rasulullah Sallallahu ‘Alayhi Wa Sallam made intention for both Hajj and ‘Umrah as if Rasulullah Sallallahu ‘Alayhi Wa Sallam was entering into the state of Ihraam for the Qiraan Hajj.

Hazrat Ikramah Radiyallahu ‘Anhu narrates that he heard from Hazrat ‘Abdullah ibn Abbas Radiyallahu ‘Anhu, who mentioned hearing it from Hazrat ‘Umar Radiyallahu ‘Anhu, who in turn stated that he heard it from Rasulullah Sallallahu ‘Alayhi Wa Sallam, while they were in Wadi ‘Aqeeq that an angel from his Rabb had appeared to him during the night and instructed him to pray in this blessed valley. Furthermore, the angel conveyed the message that ‘Umrah had been included as part of the rites of Hajj. (Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith No. 1461, pg. 557)

Ihraam and Talbiyah
During his one-day layover at Zul-Hulayfah, Rasulullah Sallallahu ‘Alayhi Wa Sallam, completing the five prayers, made the intention for both Hajj and ‘Umrah and recited the Talbiyah aloud. He encouraged the Sahaabah Radiyallahu ‘Anhum to join him in reciting the Talbiyah loudly, stating that Hazrat Jibreel ‘Alayhis Salaam had advised him to do so. The Sahaabah Radiyallahu ‘Anhum followed suit, raising their voices in prayer and supplication.

While continuing on his journey, Rasulullah Sallallahu ‘Alayhi Wa Sallam kept on reciting the following well-known Talbiyah:

لَبَّيْكَ اَللّٰهُمَّ لَبَّيْكَ، لَبَّيْكَ لَا شَرِيْكَ لَكَ لَبَّيْكَ، اِنَّ الْحَمْدَ وَالنِّعْمَةَ لَكَ وَالْمُلْكَ، لَا شَرِيْكَ لَك
“I am at Your service. O Allah! I am present. I am present. You have no partner. I am present. Surely all praise and grace and sovereignty is for You. You have no partner.” (Sahih Bukhari – Hadith No. 1474, p. 561)

Before making the intention of Ihraam, Rasulullah Sallallahu ‘Alayhi Wa Sallam placed a garland around the sacrificial animals and marked the hump with colour, serving as a distinctive sign for those who were viewing from afar that these are sacrificial animals. (Sahih Al Muslim – Hadith No. 1243, pg. 495)

While adorning the Ihraam, Rasulullah Sallallahu ‘Alayhi Wa Sallam supplicated, asking Allah to accept the Hajj and to keep it without ostentation or fame through the following Du’aa. (Sunan Ibn Majah Hadith No. 2890, p. 314)

اللَّهُمَّ حَجَّةٌ لاَ رِيَاءَ فِيهَا وَلاَ سُمْعَةَ
“O Allah, (enable me to make) Hajj with no Riya’ (show-off in the sense of desire that others witness one’s good acts) or Sum’ah (show-off related to desire that others hear about one’s good acts) in it.”
