Sunnats and Aadaab of Visiting the Sick – Part 5

1. If it will not be causing any inconvenience, then one may ask the sick person to make Duaa to Allah Ta’ala on his behalf

عَن عُمَرَ بنِ الخَطَّاب رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنهُ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيهِ وَسَلَّمَ : إِذَا دَخَلتَ عَلَى مَرِيضٍ فَمُرْهُ يَدْعَو لَكَ فَإِنَّ دُعَاءَهُ كَدُعَاءِ الْمَلَائِكَةِ . (ابن ماجه ص104)

Hadhrat Umar (Radhiallahu Anhu) reports that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said: “When visiting the sick person, (if it is possible for you to ask him to make duaa on your behalf) then ask him to make duaa for you, for indeed his duaa is similar to the duaa of the angels (due to him being cleansed of his sins).

2. It is Sunnah for one to make wudhu before visiting the sick.

عَن أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ  رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنهُ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَى اللهُ عَلَيهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَنْ تَوَضَّأَ فَأَحْسَنَ الْوُضُوءَ وَعَادَ أَخَاهُ الْمُسْلِمَ مُحْتَسِبًا بُوْعِدَ مِنْ جَهَنَّمَ مَسِيرَةَ سَبْعِينَ خَرِيفًا. (أبو داود ص441)

Hadhrat Anas (Radhiallahu Anhu) reports that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said: “The one who makes a perfect wudhu (i.e. through fulfilling all the sunan and mustahabbaat of wudhu) and sets out to visit his sick Muslim brother with the hope of receiving the rewards for visiting the sick, such a person will be kept away from Jahannum the distance of seventy years.
