Duaas

1. One should recite the following duaa before going to sleep

(بِسمِ الله) اللَّهُمَّ أَسْلَمْتُ نَفْسِي إِلَيْكَ، وَوَجَّهْتُ وَجْهِي إِلَيْكَ، وَفَوَّضْتُ أَمْرِي إِلَيْكَ، وَأَلْجَأْتُ ظَهْرِي إِلَيْكَ، رَغْبَةً وَرَهْبَةً إِلَيْكَ، لاَ مَلْجَأَ وَلاَ مَنْجَا مِنْكَ إِلَّا إِلَيْكَ، آمَنْتُ بِكِتَابِكَ الَّذِي أَنْزَلْتَ، وَبِنَبِيِّكَ الَّذِي أَرْسَلْتَ

In the name of Allah (I lay down to sleep).…

One should recite Surah Ikhlaas at night

عن أبي الدرداء رضي الله عنه عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم قال  أيعجز أحدكم أن يقرأ في ليلة ثلث القرآن قالوا وكيف يقرأ ثلث القرآن قال قل هو الله أحد تعدل ثلث القرآن (مسلم رقم 811)

Hadhrat Abu Dardaa (Radhiyallahu Anhu) reports that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said: “Why are you unable to recite one third of the Qur’an every night?”…

One should recite the following duaa before going to sleep:

بِاسْمِكَ رَبِّي فَاغْفِر لي ذَنْبِي 

O my Rabb, with Your name (have I lay down to sleep), so forgive my sins

عن عبد الله بن عمرو أن النبي صلى الله عليه و سلم كان إذا اضطجع للنوم يقول : باسمك ربي فاغفر لي ذنبي  رواه أحمد وإسناده حسن (مجمع الزوائد رقم 17045)

Hadhrat Abdullah bin Amr (Radhiyallahu Anhu) reports that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) would recite the following duaa when retiring to bed:

بِاسْمِكَ رَبِّي فَاغْفِر لي ذَنْبِي …

1. One should recite Surah Kaafiroon before sleeping

عن جبلة بن حارثة أن النبي صلى الله عليه و سلم قال : إذا أويت إلى فراشك فاقرأ :) قل يا أيها الكافرون( حتى تمر بآخرها فإنها براءة من الشرك رواه الطبراني ورجاله وثقوا (مجمع الزوائد رقم 17033)

Hadhrat Jabalah bin Haaritah reports that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said: “When you retire to bed, then recite Surah Kaafiroon till the end, for certainly reciting this surah is a means of being saved from shirk.”…

If one experiences sleeplessness, he should recite the following Duaa

اللَّهُمَّ رَبَّ السَّمَاوَاتِ السَّبْعِ وَمَا أَظَلَّتْ وَرَبَّ الْأَرَضِينَ وَمَا أَقَلَّتْ وَرَبَّ الشَّيَاطِينِ وَمَا أَضَلَّتْ كُنْ لِي جَارًا مِنْ شَرِّ خَلْقِكَ أَجْمَعِينَ، أَنْ يَفْرُطَ عَلَيَّ أَحَدٌ مِنْهُمْ، أَوْ أَنْ يَطْغَى، عَزَّ جَارُكَ، وَتَبَارَكَ اسْمُك

O Allah, the Rabb of the seven skies and whatever its shadow falls upon, and the Rabb of the (seven) earths and whatever creation it carries (above it), and the Rabb of the Shayaateen and of whom they lead astray, be my guardian (and protect me) from the evil of all Your creation, that anyone of them exceed the bounds in dealing with me, or harms me, Your protection is great and Your name is exalted.…

One should recite the following Duaa thrice upon completing his wudhu:

أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لاَ إلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ وَحْدَهُ لاَ شَرِيكَ لَهُ وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ

I testify that there is no deity besides Allah Ta’ala who is alone and has no partner and I testify that Muhammad (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) is His servant and messenger.…

One should recite the following duaa when leaving the home

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ تَوَكَّلْتُ عَلَى اللَّهِ لاَ حَوْلَ وَلاَ قُوَّةَ إِلاَّ بِاللَّهِ

In the name of Allah Ta’ala, I place my complete reliance and trust upon Allah.…

If one experiences sleeplessness, he should recite the following Duaa

اللَّهُمَّ غَارَتِ النُّجُومُ، وَهَدَأَتِ الْعُيُونُ وَأَنْتَ حَيٌّ قَيُّومٌ لا تَأخُذُكَ سِنَةٌ وَلا نَومٌ يَا حَيُّ يَا قَيُّومُ أَهْدِئْ لَيْلِي و أَنِمْ عَيْنِي

O Allah, the stars have set and the eyes are calm (resting), and You are the Ever- Living, the Eternal, neither slumber nor sleep overtakes You; O the Ever- Living, the Eternal, allow my night to pass with calmness (and rest), and allow my eyes to fall asleep.…

When reciting the Shaahadat upon completion of the wudhu, if one is in an open place, one should raise his gaze towards the sky and recite the Shaahadat.…

One should recite the following Dua upon awakening:

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي رَدَّ إِلَيَّ نَفْسِي وَلَمْ يُمِتْهَا فِي مَنَامِهَا، الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي يُمْسِكُ السَّمَوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ أَنْ تَزُولَا وَلَئِنْ زَالَتَا إنْ أمْسَكَهُمَا مِنْ أَحَدٍ مِنْ بَعْدِه إنَّهُ كَانَ حَليِمًا غَفُورًا ، الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي يُمْسِكُ السَّمَاءَ أَنْ تَقَعَ عَلَى الْأَرْضِ إِلَّا بِإِذْنِه إنَّ اللهَ بِالنَّاسِ لَرَؤُوفٌ رَّحِيم

All praise is due to Allah Ta’ala who returned my soul to me and did not cause it to die in its sleep.…
