The Du’aa Of Istikhaarah

When performing istikhaarah, one should first perform two rakaats nafl salaah. Thereafter, one should recite the following Duaa:

أَللَّهُمَّ إِنِّيْ أَسْتَخِيْرُكَ بِعِلْمِكَ وَأَسْتَقْدِرُكَ بِقُدْرَتِكَ وَأَسْأَلُكَ مِنْ فَضْلِكَ الْعَظِيْم فَإِنَّكَ تَقْدِرُ وَلاَ أَقْدِرُ وَتَعْلَمُ وَلاَ أَعْلَمُ وَأَنْتَ عَلاَّمُ الْغُيُوْب أَللَّهُمَّ إِنْ كُنْتَ تَعْلَمُ أَنَّ هَذَا الْأَمْرَ خَيْرٌ لِّيْ فِيْ دِيْنِيْ وَمَعَاشِيْ وَعَاقِبَةِ أَمْرِيْ فَاقْدِرْهُ لِيْ وَيَسِّرْهُ لِيْ ثُمَّ بَارِكْ لِيْ فِيْه وَإِنْ كُنْتَ تَعْلَمُ أَنَّ هَذَا الْأَمْرَ شَرٌّ لِّيْ فِيْ دِيْنِيْ وَمَعَاشِيْ وَعَاقِبَةِ أَمْرِيْ فَاصْرِفْهُ عَنِّيْ وَاصْرِفْنِيْ عَنْهُ وَاقْدِرْ لِيَ الْخَيْرَ حَيْثُ كَانَ ثُمَّ أَرْضِنِيْ بِه

O Allah! I seek goodness from You through Your Knowledge, and I seek ability and assistance through Your Power, and I ask You to bless me from Your infinite grace. Surely You have complete power and control (over everything), and I have none. You have knowledge (of all things) and I do not possess any knowledge (of the future). You have complete knowledge of the unseen.
O Allah! If in Your Knowledge this matter is good for me for my Deen, for my livelihood, and for my future, then ordain it for me, and make it easy for me, and bless me therein.
But if in Your Knowledge, this matter is bad for me for my Deen, for my livelihood, and for my future, then turn it away from me, and turn me away from it, and ordain for me the good wherever it be, and cause me to be pleased with it.

While reciting this duaa, when one reaches the word هَذَا الْأَمْرَ (this matter) at both places, one should think of the matter for which one is performing istikhaarah.

عن جابر بن عبد الله رضي الله عنهما قال كان رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يعلمنا الاستخارة في الأمور كما يعلمنا السورة من القرآن يقول إذا هم أحدكم بالأمر فليركع ركعتين من غير الفريضة ثم ليقل اللهم إني أستخيرك بعلمك وأستقدرك بقدرتك وأسألك من فضلك العظيم فإنك تقدر ولا أقدر وتعلم ولا أعلم وأنت علام الغيوب اللهم إن كنت تعلم أن هذا الأمر خير لي في ديني ومعاشي وعاقبة أمري أو قال عاجل أمري وآجله فاقدره لي ويسره لي ثم بارك لي فيه وإن كنت تعلم أن هذا الأمر شر لي في ديني ومعاشي وعاقبة أمري أو قال في عاجل أمري وآجله فاصرفه عني واصرفني عنه واقدر لي الخير حيث كان ثم أرضني قال ويسمي حاجته (صحيح البخاري رقم 1162)

Hazrat Jaabir (radhiyallahu anhu) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) would teach us to make istikhaarah in all our important affairs like how he would teach us a surah of the Qur’aan. Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) would say, “When anyone of you intend to embark on any important affair, then he should perform two rakaats nafl salaah and thereafter recite the following duaa”: 

اللهم إني أستخيرك بعلمك وأستقدرك بقدرتك وأسألك من فضلك العظيم فإنك تقدر ولا أقدر وتعلم ولا أعلم وأنت علام الغيوب اللهم إن كنت تعلم أن هذا الأمر خير لي في ديني ومعاشي وعاقبة أمري أو قال عاجل أمري وآجله فاقدره لي ويسره لي ثم بارك لي فيه وإن كنت تعلم أن هذا الأمر شر لي في ديني ومعاشي وعاقبة أمري أو قال في عاجل أمري وآجله فاصرفه عني واصرفني عنه واقدر لي الخير حيث كان ثم أرضني
