Sunnats and Aadaab of Azaan and Iqaamah – Part 15

Sunnah Method of Calling out the Iqaamah

1. It is preferable that the iqaamah be called out by the person who called out the azaan.

Hazrat Ziyaad bin Haarith Sudaa’ee (radhiyallahu anhu) reports, “On one occasion, I was with Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) on a journey. He commanded me to call out the azaan and I did so. Thereafter, Hazrat Bilaal (radhiyallahu anhu) intended to call out the iqaamah. However, Hazrat Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said to him, ‘Your Sudaa’ee brother (from Sudaa’, a famous tribe from Yemen,) has called out the azaan, and the one who calls out the azaan should give the iqaamah.’”

2. Turn your face to the right when saying حَيَّ عَلٰى الصَّلَاةْ (hayya alas salaah) and to the left when saying حَيَّ عَلٰى الْفَلَاحْ (hayya alal falaah).
3. Once the iqaamah is being called out for salaah, do not engage in performing the sunnah salaah. Rather, immediately join the fardh salaah. After the fardh salaah, perform the sunnah if it was not performed before the fardh salaah. However, Asr Salaah and Fajr Salaah are an exception. In the case of Asr Salaah, one will not perform the sunnats after the fardh, as nafl salaah cannot be performed after Asr Salaah until sunset. In the case of Fajr Salaah, even if the fardh has commenced, one will perform the sunnats before joining the fardh, provided one is sure that he will be able to join the fardh before the imaam makes salaam.

عن أبي هريرة رضي الله عنه عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم قال إذا أقيمت الصلاة فلا صلاة إلا المكتوبة (صحيح مسلم، الرقم: 710)

Hazrat Abu Hurairah (radhiyallahu anhu) reports that Hazrat Nabi (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said, “Once the iqaamah is called out, no salaah is to be performed besides the fardh salaah.”
