Sunnats and Aadaab of Azaan and Iqaamah – Part 3

1. Call out the azaan in the state of wudhu.

عن أبي هريرة رضي الله عنه عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم قال لا يؤذن إلا متوضئ (سنن الترمذي، الرقم: 200)

Hazrat Abu Hurairah (radhiyallahu anhu) reports that Hazrat Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said, “The one calling out the azaan should be in the state of wudhu.”

2. Face the qiblah when calling out the azaan.

عن معاذ بن جبل رضي الله عنه قال… فجاء عبد الله بن زيد رجل من الأنصار وقال فيه فاستقبل القبلة… (سنن أبي داود، الرقم: 507)

Hazrat Mu’aaz bin Jabal (radhiyallahu anhu) reports, “… Hazrat Abdullah bin Zaid (radhiyallahu anhu), who was from the Ansaar, came (and related his dream to Hazrat Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) wherein he was taught the words of the azaan), and he (the angel in the dream) faced the qiblah (and called out the azaan).”

عن الحسن ومحمد قالا إذا أذن المؤذن استقبل القبلة (المصنف لابن أبي شيبة، الرقم: 2243)

It is reported from Hazrat Hasan Basri (rahimahullah) and Hazrat Muhammad bin Munkadir (rahimahullah) that when the muazzin calls out the azaan, he should face the qiblah.

3. Call out the azaan while standing.

عبد الجبار بن وائل عن أبيه قال حق وسنة أن لا يؤذن الرجل إلا وهو طاهر ولا يؤذن إلا وهو قائم (التلخيص الحبير، الرقم: 301)

Abdul Jabbaar bin Waail (rahimahullah) relates from his father, Hazrat Waail (radhiyallahu anhu), “It is established in the sunnah that the muazzin should call out the azaan in the state of wudhu and whilst he is standing.”

4. Call out the azaan slowly and pause after calling out each phrase of the azaan.

عن جابر رضي الله عنه أن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم قال لبلال إذا أذنت فترسل… (سنن الترمذي، الرقم: 195)

Hazrat Jaabir (radhiyallahu anhu) reports that Hazrat Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) addressed Hazrat Bilaal (radhiyallahu anhu) saying, “When you call out the azaan then call it out with tarassul (gradually, with pausing after each phrase) …”
