Sunnats and Aadaab of Wudhu-Part 1

1. When making wudhu, sit on a raised place (e.g. a chair) and face the qiblah. The place where one makes wudhu should be a clean place.

Hazrat Abd Khair (rahimahullah) reports that a chair was brought to Hazrat Ali (radhiyallahu anhu). He then sat on the chair (in order to demonstrate the wudhu of Hazrat Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam)). Thereafter, he requested that a utensil of water be brought. He then commenced by pouring water on his hands thrice (i.e. he washed his hands thrice till the wrists).

2. Make the intention for wudhu.
3. Recite the masnoon dua before commencing the wudhu:

(I commence) in the name of Allah Ta’ala and all praise belongs to Allah Ta’ala.

Hazrat Abu Hurairah (radhiyallahu anhu) reports that Hazrat Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said, “O Abu Hurairah! When you perform wudhu, then (first) recite the dua Through reciting this dua, the malaa’ikah (angels) which protect you (are commanded to) continuously record good deeds for you until you break that wudhu.”

4. Wash both the hands up to the wrists thrice.

Hazrat Humraan (rahimahullah), the freed slave of Hazrat Uthmaan (radhiyallahu anhu), reports that Hazrat Uthmaan (radhiyallahu anhu) requested that water be brought (to demonstrate to the people how to perform wudhu). He then commenced the wudhu by washing his hands (till the wrists) thrice. (In this narration, which appears in Saheeh Bukhaari, Hazrat Uthmaan (radhiyallahu anhu) said, “I had seen Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) perform wudhu in this manner).”

5. Cleanse the mouth with a miswaak. When using the miswaak, brush the teeth in a horizontal manner and the tongue in a vertical manner. In the absence of a miswaak, you may use your finger as a substitute.

Hazrat Aaishah (radhiyallahu anha) reports that Hazrat Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said, “The salaah performed after cleansing the mouth with the miswaak is seventy times superior and more rewarding than the salaah performed without using the miswaak.”

Hazrat Anas (radhiyallahu anhu) reports that Hazrat Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said, “The finger can be used as a substitute in the absence of a miswaak.”
