Sunnats and Aadaab of Clothing – Part 16

1. Men should not wear clothing that resembles ladies, nor should women wear clothing that resembles men.

عن ابن عباس رضي الله عنهما قال لعن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم المتشبهين من الرجال بالنساء والمتشبهات من النساء بالرجال رواه البخاري وأبو داود والترمذي والنسائي وابن ماجه والطبراني وعنده أن امرأة مرت على رسول الله صلى الله عليه و سلم متقلدة قوسا فقال لعن الله المتشبهات من النساء بالرجال والمتشبهين من الرجال بالنساء (الترغيب والترهيب رقم 3139)

It is reported from Hadhrat ibn Abbaas (radhiyallahu anhuma) that Nabi (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) had cursed those men that imitate women (in their dressing and appearance), and those women that imitate men (in their dressing and appearance). It is reported that on one occasion a woman passed by Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) carrying a bow around her neck (in the spirit to imitate the soldiers of Deen). Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) observing this scene, said “May Allah’s curse fall on those men that imitate women and those women that imitate men in their ways.”

2. One should fold his clothing or hang it in a cupboard and keep it in a neat condition. He should not keep his clothing left around in an untidy condition.

عن صالح بن أبي حسان قال : سمعت سعيد بن المسيب يقول إن الله طيب يحب الطيب نظيف يحب النظافة كريم يحب الكرم جواد يحب الجود فنظفوا أراه قال أفنيتكم ولا تشبهوا باليهود قال فذكرت ذلك لمهاجر بن مسمار فقال حدثنيه عامر بن سعد بن أبي وقاص عن أبيه عن النبي صلى الله عليه و سلم مثله إلا أنه قال نظفوا أفنيتكم قال أبو عيسى هذا حديث غريب و خالد بن إلياس يضعف. Hazrat Saeed bin Musayyib (Rahimahullah) is reported to have said: “Certainly Allah Ta’ala is pure and He loves purity. Allah Ta’ala is clean and loves cleanliness. Allah Ta’ala is kind and loves kindness. Allah Ta’ala is generous and loves generosity. Hence keep the courtyards of your homes clean and do not reassemble the Jews (in their untidiness).
