Sunnats and Aadaab of Greeting (Salaam) – Part 5

1. The words of salaam end with  “Wa barakaatuhu”. One should not add any other words after “Wa barakaatuhu”.

عن محمد بن عمرو بن عطاء قال : كنت جالسا عند عبد الله بن عباس فدخل عليه رجل يماني فقال : السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته ثم زاد شيئا مع ذلك أيضا قال ابن عباس رضي الله عنهما: من هذا ؟ وهو يومئذ قد ذهب بصره قالوا : هذا اليماني الذي يغشاك فعرفوه إياه حتى عرفه قال ابن عباس : إن السلام انتهى إلى البركة. Muhammad bin Amr bin Ataa’ (Rahimahullah) reports: “On one occasion I was seated with Hadhrat Abdullah bin Abbaas (Radhiyallahu Anhuma), when a person from Yemen entered the gathering and made salaam saying ‘Assalaam Alaikum Wa Rahmatullahi Wabaraakatuhu,’ and he then added some words with the salaam.  Hadhrat Abdullah bin Abbaas (Radhiyallahu Anhuma) asked: “Who is this person?” as at that time he had lost his eyesight. His companions said: “This is the person from Yemen who comes to your gatherings regularly.” They described the person until Hadhrat Abdullah bin Abbaas (Radhiyallahu Anhuma) recognized him. Hadhrat Abdullah bin Abbaas (Radhiyallahu Anhuma) then said: “Salaam ends with barakah (i.e. by saying Wabaraakatuhu).”
